Biogas plants - due to the abundance of livestock
in rural India - are the answer to fuel and power related problems
in villages. SCOPE succeeded where government failed by creating
among beneficiaries awareness on the importance and need of
such units. The saga continues even today with differences.
A total of 15 biogas plants have been constructed
in the target area of which 4 are connected to latrines. This
saves village women precious time for collecting fuelwood, sizable
quantities of cow dung. It is expected that more families will
construct biogas plants. As a result of latrines being connected
to bio-gas units the problem of leach pits filling up has not
been witnessed even after a long time, The gas produced can
be used for lighting and cooking resulting in conservation of
energy, reduction in expenses and continuous availability of
energy for lighting and cooking. Further the slurry can be used
as a fertilizer, resulting it reduction in use of chemical fertilizer
and additional income by selling it (or) reduction of expense
on purchase of manure.
