Water
plays a major role in rural communities, which always do not
have access to good drinking water. Ignorance of this results
in villagers falling prey to a host of water borne diseases
which in turn affects the work day and wages of the villager.
SCOPE stepped into this vacuum by creating awareness among villagers
about combating diseases while providing them water sources
through borewells and handpumps and training villagers in their
upkeep.
The
major killer diseases, as shown above are caused by lack of
safe drinking water. Further insufficiency of water also leads
to various problems like skin infections, eye infections and
diarrhea to protect the target people from such dangers diseases,
SCOPE has so for
1.
Installed handpumps
2.
Restored handpumps
3.
Provided electric motor pumps
4.
Extended pipe lines
5.
Conducted awareness and Health camps
6.
Extended mechanics and caretakers training
7.
Provided maintenance tools and kits to
village sangams
8.
Covered open deep wells, etc
The communities continue to carefully
maintain the resources created. The womens sangams have formed
drinking water sanitation committees called the WASAN committee
for this purpose.
Caretakers training
An
idea pioneered by SCOPE, the programme resulted in the selection
of 4 caretakers for each handpump in the organisation's operational
area. The caretakers are in charge of ensuring that the area
around the handpump is clean and neat while at the same time
ensuring that waste water from the handpump is used for raising
a small garden nearby, the fruits of which go to meet the upkeep
of the handpump.
SCOPE
has conducted caretakers training in its operational area, with
women being given importance thereby leading to their empowerment.
They also impart advice on the correct way to use the pump.
As each village panchayat has four caretakers per handpump,
their collection of a minimal amount from users ensures that
in emergencies when problems crop up with the pump, the money
is used for much needed repair and replacement of parts.
