SCOPE
was the first organisation to teach people that platforms
surrounding handpumps need not be used for washing clothes
alone. Its role in raising nearby mini gardens led to a changed
mindset, increased revenue, beauty and functioning handpumps.
In
the target area, it is found that people do not have adequate
vessels to store water for washing clothes. Further, the people
find it tedious to carry several pots of water to their houses
for washing. Hence, they are in the habit of washing clothes
near water sources. Constructing washing platform protects
hand pump water from getting contaminated and preserves the
surroundings. Further, beneficiarie’s time and energy
will be saved and this could be used in productive ways. SCOPE
has constructed 60 washing platforms near hand pumps in target
villages. y

Lack
of timely rain and the hardy nature of soil in the operational
area necessitated the spread of rain water harvesting message
to the rural masses. While this concept caught the imagination
of the government only recently, SCOPE had already undertaken
this work in rural areas with irrigation tanks being deepened/desilted
regularly when they silted up to ensure more area for water
retention.
While rain water harvesting is already underway in urban areas,
it is yet to become a movement in rural areas. However SCOPE
has already started disseminating this information to ensure
that villagers understand the urgency and need for this facility
in individual houses. Ir urban areas, SCOPE has successfully
undertaken this project in the slums.
