The
availability of vast open spaces and ignorance about problems
created by open defecation were seen as the main reasons for
villagers practicing open defecation and the subsequent failure
of government sanitation programmes. SCOPE's success in this
lay in its approach based on location specific ground realities
and rapport with villagers created over years of sustained activity.
Conducting village meetings, organising sangams, explaining
the effects of open defecation, awareness on benefits of latrine
usage, clarification of doubts, masonry training to local youth,
construction of latrines by a few, wall paintings, school health
programme, observing changes in neighbors behaviour, construction
of low cost latrines, house visits to promote latrine usage,
awareness camps and health camps were activities undertaken
by SCOPE to promote latrine usage among the people. SCOPE has
been experimenting with various methods to reach the target
community. The continuous and innovative efforts of SCOPE staff
and the motivation and assistance extended by WaterAid staff
have helped SCOPE to bring about a revolutionary change by constructing
6000 individual latrines and 50 School sanitary blocks in selected
villages. Further, 8 community latrine have been constructed
in urban slums.
Soak pit \ Kitchen Garden
“Nothing
is wasted in nature” is an axion which SCOPE holds dear
and this was the reason for its advocacy of soakpits and kitchen
gardens.
The
wastewater of the households are sent in a separate channel
and is either saved in the soak pit or passed into the kit47chen
garden. Through the kitchen garden, people enjoy some benefit.
It also helps to reduce the stagnation of water and spreading
of diseases, hence the method has been widely appreciated and
practiced in many households.
Compost Pit
An
unclean environment helps breed flies, which spread diseases
like Diarrhoea, Dysentery, Gastroenteritis, Typhoid, Cholera,
Amoebiasis, Conjunctivitis and Trachoma. The diseases are spread
with the help of the sticky substance created by the numerous
short hairs found in the body. Thus, it is important that solid
waste materials are properly disposed of.
